On Wednesday evening, Flicket Nelson Sparks Captain Amanda Wayment and Flicket Nelson Giants Captain Sam Dempster will represent their teams in the first ever draft for the NBL’s Schick 3X3 Cup.
To be played from 14-16 October at Invercargill’s ILT Stadium Southland, the League has introduced a draft to the second year of the Schick 3X3 Cup. Each team has selected a captain, and on Wednesday night, the captains will draft the rest of their teams.
Both drafts will be three rounds long. In the women’s draft, the Sparks hold the 7th and the 14th picks, while in the men’s the Giants hold the 1st and the 20th picks. In both drafts, the order for the third round will be drawn randomly on the night.
Giants Captain Sam Dempster is embracing the excitement.
“The draft is as exciting for the players as it is for the fans, and it’s an honour to captain my hometown team again. I’m already getting plenty of messages from other players asking what I’m going to do with the number 1 pick, but they’ll just have to wait until Wednesday night to find out!”
Sparks Captain Amanda Wayment was part of the 2020 Schick 3X3 Cup winning Auckland Dream and is thrilled to be representing the Sparks on their return to NBL competition.
“As a player, there’s no guarantee when or to who you’ll be drafted, so when the Sparks approached me and asked me to be captain, it was an easy decision. They emphasised how important it was for girls’ and women’s basketball in Nelson to have the Sparks back at a national level, and for me it’s very special to be a part of that.”
Supporting both the 3X3 Giants and the 3X3 Sparks in 2021 is ticketing company Flicket. They’ve joined the teams as naming rights and uniform sponsors.
Nelson Giants General Manager Mike Fitchett is grateful for their support.
“The support from Flicket has made this year’s 3X3 campaigns for both the Giants and the Sparks possible. We’re proud to be associated with an innovative Kiwi owned and operated business whose core focus is us and our fans.”
Flicket Co-Founder Ben Calvert is delighted to extend the company’s association with the top of the south, having already partnered with the Tasman Mako.
"The team at Flicket is thrilled to support the Sparks and the Giants in the NBL's Schick 3X3 Cup. We are proud to play our part in one of our nation’s fastest-growing sports and look forward to growing with the teams."
